What is Wudu?

Wudu (وضوء), also known as ablution, is the ritual washing required before performing Salah (prayer), touching the Quran, and certain other acts of worship. It is both a physical and spiritual purification that prepares the believer to stand before Allah.

Allah ﷻ commands in the Quran:

"O you who have believed, when you rise to pray, wash your faces and your forearms up to the elbows, wipe over your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles." (Quran 5:6)

The Prophet ﷺ said: "When a Muslim performs wudu, his sins fall from his body — even from under his nails." (Muslim). Wudu is therefore not just cleanliness, but a powerful act of worship that renews your connection with Allah.

When is Wudu Required?

Obligatory (Fard) before:

  • All five daily prayers (Salah)
  • Voluntary (Nafl) prayers
  • Touching the physical Quran (mushaf)
  • Circumambulating the Kaaba (Tawaf)

Highly Recommended before:

  • Sleeping
  • Reciting Quran from memory
  • Making dua or dhikr
  • Entering the mosque

The Fard (Obligatory) Acts of Wudu

These four acts must be performed for wudu to be valid:

  2. Wash both arms — from fingertips to elbows (right first, then left)
  3. Wipe the head — at least a portion of the head with wet hands
  4. Wash both feet — up to and including the ankles (right first, then left)
