Prayer Times: Understanding the 5 Daily Salah
Knowing the correct prayer times is fundamental to every Muslim's daily worship. The five daily prayers (salawat) are the second pillar of Islam and the most important obligation after the testimony of faith. Each prayer has a specific time window determined by the position of the sun, and understanding these prayer times ensures you never miss this vital connection with Allah.
إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا
"Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at specified times." (Quran 4:103)
This verse confirms that prayer times are divinely appointed — they are not arbitrary but tied to natural phenomena that Allah created. For accurate prayer times based on your exact location, use our Prayer Times Calculator.
The Five Daily Prayer Times Explained
1. Fajr (الفجر) — The Dawn Prayer
"Establish prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night and the Quran of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed." (Quran 17:78)
- Begins: At true dawn (Subh Sadiq) — when a horizontal line of light appears on the eastern horizon
- Ends: At sunrise (when the upper edge of the sun appears above the horizon)
- Number of rak'ahs: 2 fard (obligatory) + 2 sunnah mu'akkadah (confirmed sunnah before fard)
- Best time to pray: Early in its time, while it's still dark (according to most scholars)
- Special virtue: Angels of the night and day witness this prayer; it protects from hypocrisy
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever prays the two cool prayers (Fajr and Asr) will enter Paradise." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
2. Dhuhr (الظهر) — The Noon Prayer
- Begins: When the sun passes its zenith (highest point) and starts declining westward
- Ends: When the shadow of an object equals its own length plus its shadow at zenith (Hanafi: twice its length)
- Number of rak'ahs: 4 fard + 4 sunnah before + 2 sunnah after
- Best time to pray: Slightly after the beginning of its time (to let the heat subside)
- On Friday: Replaced by Jumu'ah (Friday) prayer for men — 2 rak'ahs with khutbah
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The heat you feel is from the breath of Hell, so delay the (Dhuhr) prayer until it cools down." (Sahih al-Bukhari) — This applies in extremely hot climates.
3. Asr (العصر) — The Afternoon Prayer
حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَىٰ
"Guard strictly your prayers, especially the middle prayer (Asr)." (Quran 2:238)
- Begins: When the shadow of an object equals its length (Shafi'i/Maliki/Hanbali) or twice its length (Hanafi)
- Ends: At sunset (makruh to delay until the sun turns yellow)
- Number of rak'ahs: 4 fard (+ 4 optional sunnah before, according to some scholars)
- Best time to pray: Early in its time window
- Special warning: Missing Asr intentionally is severely warned against in hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever misses the Asr prayer, it is as if he lost his family and property." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
4. Maghrib (المغرب) — The Sunset Prayer
- Begins: Immediately after sunset (when the entire disk of the sun disappears below the horizon)
- Ends: When the red twilight (shafaq) disappears from the western sky
- Number of rak'ahs: 3 fard + 2 sunnah after
- Best time to pray: As soon as possible after the adhan — this prayer has the shortest window
- Special note: It is recommended to hasten this prayer and not delay it
The Prophet ﷺ would pray Maghrib as soon as the sun set, without delay. This is the Sunnah practice.
5. Isha (العشاء) — The Night Prayer
- Begins: When the red/white twilight disappears completely from the western sky
- Ends: At midnight (the midpoint between Maghrib and Fajr) — though it remains valid until Fajr
- Number of rak'ahs: 4 fard + 2 sunnah after + 3 witr
- Best time to pray: In the first third of the night (delaying slightly from its start is preferred)
- Special virtue: Praying Isha in congregation equals half the night in prayer
The Prophet ﷺ said: "If it were not difficult for my ummah, I would have commanded them to delay Isha." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
How Prayer Times Are Calculated
Prayer times are determined by the sun's position relative to the observer's location. Different calculation methods exist, used by various Islamic organizations worldwide:
Major Calculation Methods for Prayer Times
- Muslim World League (MWL): Fajr at 18°, Isha at 17° — used in Europe, Far East
- Egyptian General Authority: Fajr at 19.5°, Isha at 17.5° — used in Africa, Middle East
- University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi: Fajr at 18°, Isha at 18° — used in Pakistan, South Asia
- Umm al-Qura, Makkah: Fajr at 18.5°, Isha fixed 90 min after Maghrib — used in Saudi Arabia
- Islamic Society of North America (ISNA): Fajr at 15°, Isha at 15° — used in North America
- Institute of Geophysics, Tehran: Fajr at 17.7°, Isha at 14° — used in Iran
What Do the Degrees Mean?
The degree values refer to the sun's angle below the horizon. For Fajr, it's the angle at which true dawn becomes visible. For Isha, it's when twilight completely disappears. Higher degree values mean earlier Fajr and later Isha times.
Asr Calculation Difference
- Standard (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali): Asr begins when shadow = object length + noon shadow
- Hanafi: Asr begins when shadow = 2× object length + noon shadow (later time)

- Plan around prayers: Schedule meetings and activities between prayer times, not over them
- Find a prayer space: Identify clean, quiet spots at work or school for prayer
- Pray in congregation: Going to the mosque creates accountability and routine
- Wake up for Fajr: Sleep early, set multiple alarms, ask family to wake you
- Make wudu before sleeping: The Prophet ﷺ recommended this to make waking easier
Special Prayer Times and Situations
Forbidden Times for Voluntary Prayer
- After Fajr prayer until the sun has fully risen (about 15-20 minutes after sunrise)
- When the sun is at its zenith (just before Dhuhr — about 5-10 minutes)
- After Asr prayer until the sun has completely set
Prayer Times in Extreme Latitudes
In regions above 48° latitude (northern Europe, Scandinavia, northern Canada), prayer times can become extremely long or short. Scholars recommend:
- If twilight never disappears: Estimate Isha based on the nearest city where it does
- If the sun never fully sets: Follow the timetable of the nearest normal city
- If Fajr is extremely early: Some scholars allow following Makkah's timetable
- Consult your local Islamic authority for specific guidance
Combining and Shortening Prayers (Qasr and Jam')
- Traveling: Shorten 4-rak'ah prayers to 2 rak'ahs (Dhuhr, Asr, Isha)
- Combining: Dhuhr+Asr together, or Maghrib+Isha together while traveling
- Rain/illness: Some scholars allow combining at home for genuine hardship
- Fajr and Maghrib: Cannot be shortened (already 2 and 3 rak'ahs)
The Virtues of Praying on Time
The Prophet ﷺ was asked: "Which deed is most beloved to Allah?" He said: "Prayer at its proper time." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
- Prayer on time is the most beloved deed to Allah
- It distinguishes the believer from the hypocrite
- It serves as light on the Day of Judgment
- It erases sins between one prayer and the next
- Praying in congregation multiplies the reward by 27 times
Frequently Asked Questions About Prayer Times
What if I miss a prayer time?
If you miss a prayer unintentionally (due to sleep or forgetfulness), pray it as soon as you remember. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, its expiation is to pray it when he remembers it." (Sahih Muslim). There is no sin for genuine forgetfulness, but deliberately delaying prayer beyond its time without valid reason is a major sin.
Which calculation method should I follow for prayer times?
Follow the method used by your local mosque or Islamic authority. If you're unsure, the Muslim World League method is widely accepted. In North America, ISNA is common. The differences between methods are usually only a few minutes. Consistency with your community is more important than choosing the "best" method.
Can I pray before the adhan?
The adhan is a call to prayer that should be given when the prayer time enters. If you know the time has entered (through a reliable timetable or app), you can pray even if you haven't heard an adhan. However, praying before the time enters invalidates the prayer completely. Always verify the time has entered using our Prayer Times tool.
How do I determine prayer times when traveling?
Use a prayer times app or our online tool with GPS to get accurate times for your current location. When traveling, you have the concession to shorten 4-rak'ah prayers to 2 and to combine Dhuhr with Asr, and Maghrib with Isha. This makes it easier to maintain prayers while on the move.
What is the difference between Fajr and sunrise?
Fajr time begins at true dawn (Subh Sadiq) — when a horizontal white light appears across the eastern horizon. This is typically 60-90 minutes before sunrise depending on your location and time of year. Sunrise is when the sun's disk appears above the horizon. Fajr prayer must be completed before sunrise begins.
Is it better to pray at the beginning or end of the prayer time?
Generally, praying at the beginning of the time is best, as the Prophet ﷺ said prayer at its proper time is the most beloved deed to Allah. Exceptions include: delaying Isha slightly (preferred), delaying Dhuhr in extreme heat, and delaying Fajr slightly to pray with more people in congregation. The key is not to delay until the time is about to end.
