Why Dua Before Sleeping is Essential
The dua before sleeping is a vital part of a Muslim's nightly routine. Sleep is described in the Quran as a form of minor death, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us specific supplications to recite before sleeping that provide spiritual protection, forgiveness of sins, and a peaceful rest. Making dua before sleeping ensures that if Allah takes your soul during the night, you depart in a state of remembrance, and if He returns it, you wake up refreshed and blessed.
"Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep." (Quran 39:42)
The Prophet ﷺ never went to sleep without completing his night adhkar. He would combine specific duas, Quran recitation, and physical actions (Sunnah sleep practices) to prepare for rest. Learning and implementing the dua before sleeping is a simple yet profoundly rewarding act of worship.
Dua Before Sleeping #1: Entrusting Your Soul to Allah
Transliteration: Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya
Meaning: "In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live."
Benefits: This dua before sleeping acknowledges that sleep is like death and waking is like resurrection. It places your complete trust in Allah as you surrender consciousness.
Dua Before Sleeping #2: Seeking Protection
Transliteration: Allahumma qini 'adhabaka yawma tab'athu 'ibadak
Meaning: "O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants."
Benefits: The Prophet ﷺ used to say this dua before sleeping while placing his right hand under his cheek. It reminds us of the Hereafter and seeks Allah's mercy.
Dua Before Sleeping #3: The Comprehensive Night Dua
Meaning: "O Allah, I submit myself to You, entrust my affairs to You, turn my face to You, and lay myself down depending on You, hoping in You and fearing You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed, and in Your Prophet whom You have sent."
Benefits: The Prophet ﷺ said: "If you die that night, you will die upon the fitrah (natural disposition of Islam)." (Bukhari & Muslim). This is one of the most important dua before sleeping.
Dua Before Sleeping #4: Reciting the Last Two Verses of Al-Baqarah
"Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him." (Bukhari & Muslim)
These verses (2:285-286) provide complete protection during the night and are among the most powerful night adhkar.
Dua Before Sleeping #5: Surah Al-Mulk (Protection from the Grave)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is a surah in the Quran of thirty verses that intercedes for its companion until he is forgiven: Tabarakal-ladhi biyadihil-mulk (Surah Al-Mulk)." (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud)
Reciting Surah Al-Mulk (Chapter 67) before sleeping is a powerful night adhkar that protects from the punishment of the grave.
Dua Before Sleeping #6: Blowing into Palms with the Three Quls
Aisha (رضي الله عنها) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ would blow into his palms before sleeping, recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas, then wipe his hands over his body starting from his head and face, doing this three times. (Bukhari)
Dua Before Sleeping #7: Ayatul Kursi
Benefits: The Prophet ﷺ said: "If you recite Ayatul Kursi before sleeping, Allah will send a guardian angel to protect you throughout the night, and no devil will come near you until morning." (Bukhari)

Dua Before Sleeping: If You Wake Up at Night
If you wake up during the night, the Prophet ﷺ taught this dua:
Benefits: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever wakes up at night and says this, then says 'Allahummaghfir li' (O Allah forgive me) or makes dua, his dua will be answered. If he performs wudu and prays, his prayer will be accepted." (Bukhari)
Frequently Asked Questions About Dua Before Sleeping
What is the most important dua before sleeping?
The most important dua before sleeping is the comprehensive supplication "Allahumma aslamtu nafsi ilayk..." as the Prophet ﷺ specifically said whoever dies after saying this dies upon the fitrah. Additionally, Ayatul Kursi provides angelic protection throughout the night. If you can only do a few, prioritize these two along with the three Quls.
Can I recite dua before sleeping while lying down?
Yes, the dua before sleeping is specifically meant to be recited while lying in bed. The Prophet ﷺ would lie on his right side and then recite these supplications. You do not need to sit up or stand. In fact, the Sunnah is to recite them in your sleeping position after you have settled into bed.
Is wudu required for dua before sleeping?
Wudu is not strictly required for making dua or reciting adhkar before sleeping. However, it is highly recommended (mustahabb) as the Prophet ﷺ encouraged sleeping in a state of purity. He said: "When you go to bed, perform wudu as you would for prayer, then lie on your right side." (Bukhari & Muslim)
What should I do if I have nightmares?
The Prophet ﷺ advised: spit lightly to your left three times, seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan and from the evil of what you saw, turn to your other side, and do not tell anyone about the bad dream. Consistent recitation of dua before sleeping, especially Ayatul Kursi and the three Quls, helps prevent nightmares by providing divine protection.
How can I help my children learn dua before sleeping?
Start with the simplest dua "Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya" and gradually add more as they memorize. Make it a family routine — recite together every night. Use our Night Recitation tool for audio playback. Create a bedtime chart they can check off. The Prophet ﷺ taught children by example and gentle repetition.
