What is the Qibla?
The Qibla (قبلة) is the direction Muslims face when performing Salah (the five daily prayers). It points directly toward the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia — the holiest site in Islam. The Quran commands:
"So turn your face toward Al-Masjid Al-Haram. And wherever you are, turn your faces toward it." (Quran 2:144)
Facing the Qibla is not just a physical act — it is a powerful symbol of unity. Over 1.8 billion Muslims across every continent turn toward the same point five times a day, creating a beautiful global circle of worship around the House of Allah. The Kaaba was built by Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his son Ismail (AS) as the first house dedicated to the worship of the One True God.
Why Does the Qibla Direction Change?
Because the Earth is a sphere, the shortest path (great circle) from your location to the Kaaba changes depending on where you are. This is why the Qibla direction is different in every city and country.
Here are real examples:
- New York, USA: ≈ 59° (North-East)
- London, UK: ≈ 119° (South-East)
- Jakarta, Indonesia: ≈ 295° (North-West)
- Sydney, Australia: ≈ 278° (West)
- Cape Town, South Africa: ≈ 18° (North-North-East)
This variation beautifully illustrates how Muslims everywhere are united in direction despite living far apart.
Easiest Way: Use Our Free Qibla Finder
Our Qibla Finder is the most accurate and convenient method available. It uses your device’s GPS and compass to show the exact direction in real time.
- Visit /qibla on your phone or laptop
- Allow location access when prompted (your data is never stored)
- Calibrate your compass by moving your phone in a figure-8 motion
- Follow the arrow — it points straight to the Kaaba
The tool works offline once loaded and is accurate to within 1–2 degrees on modern smartphones.
Traditional Methods (Compass & Sun)
If you don’t have access to a smartphone, you can still find the Qibla using a compass or the sun.
Using a Compass
Find the correct bearing for your city and turn accordingly. Common bearings include:
- United Kingdom & Western Europe: ~119°
- East Coast USA: ~59°
- Pakistan & India: ~260°–275° (West)
- Malaysia & Indonesia: ~295° (North-West)
- Australia: ~275°–280° (West)
Using the Sun
The sun passes directly over the Kaaba twice a year (around May 28 and July 16). At those specific times, the shadow of a vertical stick points directly away from the Qibla. However, this method is approximate and requires precise timing.
Common Questions About Qibla
Is my prayer valid if I’m slightly off direction?
Yes. Scholars agree that as long as you make a sincere effort to face the correct direction, your prayer is valid. The Prophet ﷺ said: “What is between the East and the West is Qibla.”
What if I’m traveling or on a plane?
Face the Qibla as best as you can. If the direction changes during the flight, most scholars say your prayer remains valid as long as you started in the right direction.
Do I need to face the exact point of the Kaaba?
No. Facing the general direction of the city of Mecca is sufficient for people far away.
