What is Hajj?

Hajj (حج) is the fifth Pillar of Islam — a once-in-a-lifetime obligatory pilgrimage to the Sacred House (Kaaba) in Makkah for every physically and financially able Muslim. It occurs annually in the month of Dhul Hijjah (8th to 13th) and gathers millions of believers from every corner of the world, creating the largest peaceful gathering on Earth.

Allah says in the Quran: "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House — for whoever is able to find a way to it." (Quran 3:97). The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever performs Hajj for Allah’s sake and does not commit any obscenity or wickedness, he will return as sinless as the day his mother bore him." (Bukhari).

Who is Obligated to Perform Hajj?

Hajj becomes obligatory once in a lifetime if you meet these conditions:

  • You are a Muslim
  • You have reached the age of puberty
  • You are of sound mind
  • You are physically capable
  • You can afford the journey while providing for your family
  • The path to Makkah is safe

For women, most scholars require a mahram (unmarriageable male relative) or travelling with a trustworthy group.

The Spiritual Significance of Hajj

Hajj is a symbolic journey that reenacts the trials of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), Hajar (AS), and Ismail (AS). It is a dress rehearsal for the Day of Judgment — all pilgrims wear simple white Ihram garments, erasing distinctions of wealth, race, and status. Standing on the plain of Arafah is the heart of Hajj, where millions raise their hands begging for forgiveness.

Day 1 (8th) – Yawm al-Tarwiyah

Enter the state of **Ihram** and travel to Mina. Spend the night in prayer and reflection.

Collect pebbles and combine Maghrib & Isha prayers. Sleep under the open sky.

Day 3 (10th) – Eid al-Adha

Stone the large Jamarah, sacrifice an animal, shave/trim hair, perform Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa’i.

Stone all three Jamarat daily. Perform the Farewell Tawaf before leaving Makkah.

The 4 Pillars (Arkan) of Hajj

These four acts are mandatory. Missing any one invalidates the Hajj:

  3. Tawaf al-Ifadah
  4. Sa’i between Safa and Marwa
