What is Umrah?
Umrah (عمرة), often called the “lesser pilgrimage,” is a highly recommended act of worship that can be performed at any time of the year. While Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for those who are able, Umrah is a Sunnah Mu’akkadah (strongly recommended). The Prophet ﷺ said: "Umrah to Umrah is expiation for what is between them." (Bukhari). Performing Umrah in Ramadan carries the reward equivalent to Hajj.
Unlike Hajj, Umrah has only four main pillars and can be completed in a few hours, making it accessible for millions of Muslims worldwide.
The 4 Pillars (Arkan) of Umrah
These four acts are mandatory. Missing any one invalidates the Umrah:
- Ihram — Entering the state of consecration with intention and Talbiyah.
- Tawaf — Circling the Kaaba seven times.
- Sa'i — Walking seven times between Safa and Marwa.
- Halq or Taqsir — Shaving the head (men) or trimming the hair (women).
Step-by-Step Guide to Performing Umrah
1. Ihram (State of Consecration)
Perform ghusl, wear Ihram garments (two white seamless cloths for men; modest clothing for women), make intention for Umrah, and recite the Talbiyah loudly:
"Labbayka Allāhumma labbayk..." (Here I am, O Allah, here I am...)
2. Tawaf (Circumambulation of the Kaaba)
Upon reaching Masjid al-Haram, perform 7 circuits around the Kaaba, starting and ending at the Black Stone. Men uncover their right shoulder for the first three rounds (Ramal). Pray 2 rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim afterward.
3. Sa'i (Between Safa and Marwa)
Walk (and jog between the green lights for men) seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa, commemorating Hajar’s search for water.
4. Halq / Taqsir (Shaving or Trimming)
Men shave their heads completely (preferred) or trim. Women trim a small portion of their hair. This completes Umrah and removes the restrictions of Ihram.
