The Masjid – House of Allah

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most beloved places to Allah on earth are the mosques, and the most hated places to Allah are the markets." (Muslim). The mosque is not merely a building for prayer — it is the House of Allah, a place where angels descend, mercy is poured down, and sins are forgiven.

Entering a mosque is an act of worship in itself. Observing proper etiquette shows respect for Allah, His House, and the community of believers. This guide covers everything you need to know — whether you visit daily or are entering a mosque for the first time.

Preparation Before Entering

  • Perform Wudu – Come already in a state of ritual purity if possible. Most mosques have wudu facilities, but arriving prepared is better.
  • Dress Modestly – Men should cover from navel to knees (ideally wear a thobe or long shirt). Women should wear loose, modest clothing and a hijab. Many mosques provide spare scarves and garments.
  • Remove Shoes – Always remove shoes before stepping on the prayer carpet. Place them neatly on the rack.
  • Silence Your Phone – Set it to silent or airplane mode. A ringing phone disturbs the entire congregation.
  • Avoid Strong Odors – Do not eat garlic, onions, or smoke before coming to the mosque.

Entering the Mosque – Sunnah Practices

  • Enter with your **right foot first**
  • Recite the dua for entering:
"Bismillah, Allahumma salli ala Muhammad, Allahumma aftah li abwaba rahmatik"
  • Greet others with "Assalamu Alaikum"
  • Pray **2 rak'ahs of Tahiyyat al-Masjid** (Greeting the Mosque) before sitting — this is a highly recommended Sunnah.

Inside the Mosque – Key Etiquette

  • Speak softly — The mosque is a place of worship, not socializing.
  • Do not walk in front of someone praying — This is a major sin. Pass behind them or wait.
  • Fill rows from the front — Do not leave gaps. Stand shoulder to shoulder.
  • Maintain Khushu' (focus) during prayer — Avoid unnecessary movement.
  • Keep the mosque clean — Pick up rubbish, do not spit, and help maintain its sanctity.
  • Supervise children — They are welcome, but should not run or make noise.

Special Etiquette for Jumu'ah (Friday)

  • Arrive early — the earlier you come, the greater the reward
  • Take ghusl, wear clean clothes, and apply perfume (for men)
  • Listen attentively to the khutbah — talking during the sermon invalidates the reward
  • Do not step over people to reach a spot

Leaving the Mosque

  • Exit with your **left foot first**
  • Recite the dua for leaving the mosque
  • Make dhikr after prayer before leaving
  • Leave calmly and quietly
