What is Laylat al-Qadr?
Laylat al-Qadr (ليلة القدر) — the Night of Power, Decree, or Destiny — is the most blessed night in the entire Islamic calendar. It occurs in the last ten nights of Ramadan, most likely on one of the odd nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th).
Allah dedicated an entire Surah to this night:
"Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Power. And what can make you know what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn." (Quran 97:1-5)
Worship on this single night brings more reward than worshipping continuously for over **83 years and 4 months**. Missing it is one of the greatest losses a believer can experience.
Why is it Called the Night of Power?
The word **"Qadr"** carries beautiful meanings: power, honour, decree, and value. On this night:
- Allah sends down the divine decree for the entire coming year (provision, life, death, events).
- The Quran began its revelation to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the Cave of Hira.
- Angels, led by Jibreel (AS), descend with mercy and blessings.
When Does Laylat al-Qadr Occur?
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan, on the odd nights." (Bukhari). He encouraged seeking it especially on the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th.
While many scholars say the 27th is most likely, it can occur on any of the last ten nights and may shift year to year. Therefore, the Sunnah is to strive hard in **all** the last ten nights — especially the odd ones.
